Alien: Romulus To Get Special Edition VHS Release

Alien: Romulus released this past August to become a massive success, both critically and financially. The film earned $350.7 million on an $80 million budget as well as an 80% critic rating and an 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With the franchise celebrating its 45th Anniversary this year the popular sci-fi horror series Alien has one more surprise that is certain to intrigue, confuse and even delight fans.

The film is set to release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD on December 1st. But what is most surprising is the announcement of a limited edition VHS (Video Home System) release with a 4×3 aspect ratio.

A promotional statement for the Alien: Romulus VHS reads:

An ultimate movie collector’s dream, the fully functioning VHS tape was created in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the legendary Alien franchise, the box features artwork by renowned artist Matt Ferguson.

For those unaware, VHS was a video format first introduced in 1976. It allowed people to own and watch their favorite films and television episodes at home whenever they wanted. They could even record live television broadcasts on the VCR (Videocassette Recorder). The format did eventually fade in popularity after the introduction of the DVD (Digital Video Disc) and was eventually discontinued in 2006. Today, the format is seen as collectable like music on vinyl records. Some fans even convert newer films onto tape for fun.

Given that the franchise itself is almost as old as the format, it almost feels appropriate. It is currently unknown how many copies will be made available and how much the item will cost. It is definitely a throwback for anyone who remembers watching movies back in the day.

While this is simply an isolated incident, if this edition sells well, what will prevent other movies from doing the same?

What do you think? Are you planning on buying the limited VHS edition of Alien: Romulus? Will VHS come back in style like vinyl record music did? What other movies do you want to see on VHS? Let us know your thoughts.
