Disney now has three hits currently in theaters. “Alien: Romulus” exceeded expectations to hit about $41.5 million domestically in its opening weekend. Globally, the film reached about $108.2 million.
This is a good start for the film, which has an estimated budget of $80 million (not counting the millions in ads). If you use the normal estimates to predict break even, the film must bring in about $160 million—$200 million, and it’s already halfway there.
As I mentioned, Disney currently has three “hit” films in theaters. “Deadpool & Wolverine” has earned about $1.1 billion and is now the top box office for an “R-rated” film.

“Inside Out 2” is still in theaters over two months later and is at almost $1.6 billion, making it the biggest animated film in history and number ten on the top films of all time list.
The success of these films is good news for the Walt Disney Company, which has struggled over the past couple of years at the box office.
2023 was a very different year.
In 2023, only three films released by the company’s studios made money. “The Little Mermaid” made about $44.6 million in profit, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” made about $124 million in profit, and “Elemental” is said to have made a bit of profit, but I am not sure how much.
A lot of failure.
In contrast, 2023 gave Disney five flops, including “Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania” which lost roughly $38 million; “The Haunted Mansion” which lost about $117 million; “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which lost about $146 million; “The Marvels,” which lost about $237 million; and “Wish” which lost about $130 million.
In total, that was a loss of roughly $668 million. Even with the profits of the ones that performed, it is still about a half-billion-dollar loss. This is why the company having three films performing well is a big deal.
Hopefully, “Alien: Romulus” will continue to pick up after this weekend and not drop off as some movies can. Currently, it has an 81% critical score and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also has a B+ CinemaScore.
