Airbnb bans hosts from making guests strip beds and wash dishes

Airbnb’s new rules stop hosts from requiring guests to strip beds, wash dishes, start laundry or take out trash at checkout. The change starts with bookings made Nov. 20.

Your next vacation rental checkout could be a lot easier.

Airbnb will no longer let hosts require guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start laundry or take out the trash before they leave, according to TechCrunch.

The new rules apply to reservations made on or after Friday, Nov. 20, ABC News reported.

What chores can Airbnb hosts no longer ask for?

Tasks that take “significant effort or time“ or would usually be done by a cleaner, according to Euronews. That includes:

  • Stripping beds

  • Washing and putting away dishes

  • Starting laundry

  • Taking trash out of the home

What can Airbnb hosts still ask guests to do?

Simple, reasonable things. Hosts can still ask guests to put used dishes in the sink, ABC News reported.

Hosts can also ask guests to save water during droughts or use bear-proof trash cans in areas with wildlife, according to TechCrunch.

Can Airbnb hosts fine guests for skipping chores?

No. Hosts can’t set their own fines for guests, and they can’t charge guests for skipping a listed checkout task, according to ABC News and Euronews.

Cleaning fees are supposed to cover a standard tidy-up between guests.

Why is Airbnb changing its house rules?

Guests have complained for years. Many have pushed back on long checkout lists and asked why they should clean after paying a cleaning fee, TechCrunch reported.

Airbnb said it heard that house rules can be “confusing, onerous and hard to manage.” The company said it redesigned them to be easier to find and clearer to set.

What are Airbnb’s new standard house rules?

Hosts can now choose from seven standard house rules, according to Euronews. They cover check-in and checkout times, the number of guests, smoking, pets, quiet hours, and commercial filming and photography.

Hosts can still add their own reasonable requests. If a rule breaks the new policy, Airbnb will flag it, and the host can remove it or appeal.

House rules will also show up in more places, including the listing page, the Trips tab and reservation reminders.

How are Airbnb hosts reacting?

Some aren’t happy. Hosts on Airbnb’s community forums argued that basic cleaning helps keep homes sanitary and protects their property, TechCrunch reported.

One host wrote that guests “are given complete freedom to be lazy while the hosts bear the risk,” and said they might pull their listing.

Has Airbnb changed its fees before?

Yes. In 2023, Airbnb said more than 260,000 hosts had lowered or dropped their cleaning fees, according to TechCrunch.

Starting in May 2025, Airbnb began showing total prices, including fees but not taxes, in search results worldwide by default.

What does this mean for Disney World vacation rentals?

Fewer chores on your last day. Vacation homes in Kissimmee and around Orlando are a popular choice for big families visiting Walt Disney World, and many come with long checkout lists.

For bookings made on or after Nov. 20, those homes can’t require guests to do laundry or haul trash before heading to the airport.

What should you do if a host breaks the new rules?

Keep a record. Take screenshots of the host’s checkout instructions and any messages. If a host charges you for skipping a banned chore, contact Airbnb customer support through the app.

Rules for bookings made before Nov. 20 may still follow the old policy, so check your reservation details.
