Disney and Marvel have learned nothing from their countless attempts to shame audiences. The new Disney+ “Agatha All Along” show will debut with two episodes tomorrow and already we have countless articles and statements from people involved with the show talking about how “gay” it is. Now, I am someone who wants to watch the show. I am also someone who doesn’t really care about having organically diverse characters.
However, I do care when I see this behavior because it usually indicates a couple of things.
- The show is about agenda over good characters and story. This does not work well as we have seen with “The Acolyte.”
- This is a preemptive shield set up to dismiss criticism as “bigotry.”
- When audiences are accused of bigotry, they will not watch the show, and it escalates accusations.

Sasheer Zamata talks about representation in #AgathaAllAlong: “Witches are Queer inherently, just because we are outcast and set aside for many reasons.” https://t.co/fovgx9Ba68 pic.twitter.com/swG9SzobC4

It also isn’t helpful when Cinemablend is saying that Kathryn Haun is the first person on Disney+ to say “eat my a**” and I wish I was kidding.

I could be wrong, but I do not think this is going to go the way Disney / Marvel want it to.
By making the marketing push all about representation and not about the show they just turned a large potential audience off. While some are bigots most are just people who want fun entertainment and not more discourse.
People want a good show with good characters that happen to be diverse. Right away they are being hit with “gayest show yet.” Sadly, this is going to mean that a lot of people who may have liked the show will not even watch it because they don’t want to be preached to or accused of some kind of bigotry if they don’t like it. It’s better to just step over it. I’m not saying that it is the right thing to do, but sadly it will likely be what happens.
If they had not led with that, even though you see that it has plenty of representation from the trailer, people would likely have tuned in. I still think that some will at least give the first two-episodes a look. The debuts for these shows often go fairly well, but the if we see a steep viewership decline after those episodes, I fully expect the access media to descent upon anyone and everyone with claims of -istaphobia.
Just like we saw with “The Acolyte.” Even though it failed because the general public did not watch the show, the access media blamed “toxic fans.”

It’s also concerning that there is a review embargo for “Agatha All Along.”
Usually an embargo this close to the launch of the show indicates that the studio is worried reviews from those with early access will not be favorable. Given the push to activate the “diversity shield” ahead of the show’s release, I’m starting to wonder how bad the show actually is.
Hopefully the show is good. I really want it to be good. But all the red flags are in play and I’m worried that people are going to skip “Agatha All Along” over those flags.
One thing I know for sure. If audiences do skip the show, or criticize the show, even for valid reasons,”news” articles from the pop culture blogs will be full of hit pieces on all the “toxic bigots” who didn’t like it. That is NOT helpful to anyone, especially Marvel and Disney.
Heck, it’s already started.

“Agatha All Along” debutes tomorrow on Disney+ at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET.
I truly hope it doesn’t suck and my worries are unfounded. I have been looking forward to this show since “WandaVision.”
