A Sequel To The Eternals Is Currently Not In The Cards At Marvel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to drop one of its most anticipated movies in years, the moment the Fox-era X-Men franchise finally crosses into the MCU following the 2019 buyout. Deadpool & Wolverine will be both the end of that era and the beginning of another.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the MCU has struggled at the box office. While movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did well, others like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels did poorly, even losing money for the studio.

Another film from this period that did poorly was The Eternals, Marvel’s attempt at creating a new hero team to stand alongside the Avengers and Guardians. However, the film only made $402.1 million on a $236.2 million budget. The fact that the film wasn’t released in China may have hurt its chances. Not only did the film not reach the expected numbers, but it may have even lost money due to the amount of marketing and promotional deals.

The film received a somewhat “mixed” reception, earning only a 47% critical score on RT. Many said that the film was drawn out and had a rather confusing ending. There was also the issue of introducing a dozen new characters that very few people connected with. The director, Chloé Zhao, reportedly wanted to end the movie with the earth exploding, but that obviously wasn’t going to happen under Disney’s watch.

Now, three years later, the MCU acknowledges the events of the film, with the remains of a dead celestial being a part of Captain America: Brave New World. But what about the actual heroes themselves? Inverse was recently able to ask Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige about any possible continuation of the Eternals in the future. He stated:

There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2. There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.

With the MCU possibly soft-rebooting following Avengers: Secret Wars, we might not see this version of the characters again. Only time will tell.

What do you think? Do you want an Eternals 2? Or is it best to forget them?
