Disney has been trying to bring more Star Wars and Marvel to Disney+, but the oversaturation has seen demand for the shows decline in recent years. Now, according to Deadline, Marvel Television has paused the development of three upcoming projects including: “Nova,” “Strange Academy,” and “Terror, Inc.”
Why haven’t we heard about these projects before?
Deadline says that Marvel indicated they were in development but were not officially announced. They also stressed that Marvel could still return to development on these at some point, but “the studio has simply shifted its priorities at the moment.”
Translation: They are out of money or know they won’t get enough views to warrant them.
Originally, Marvel would announce shows and release windows and then develop those shows. Now, they are changing the process because, in my opinion, budgets, lower viewership, and oversaturation have occurred.
Moving forward, Marvel wants to have many more shows in development than what actually gets made. They will be headed up by showrunners overseeing the entire show instead of multiple directors. This change started with “Daredevil: Born Again.” They scrapped the show and started again with this new model.
What are Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror Inc.?
These are three stories based on comic book series.
Nova was created by Marv Wolfan and John Romita Sr. in 1976. The character has multiple names but he was a survivor of an “intergalactic military and police force known as the Nova Corps.” They use the Nova Force to “protect the universe.”
Strange Academy is, of course, tied to Doctor Strange.
It would have been based on the 2020 comic series by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos. Doctor Strange starts a school in New Orleans to train those with magical abilities. Wong was set to lead the school.
Terror, Inc. is based on a 1992 comic created by Margaret Clark, Dan Chichester, and Klaus Janson (originally, it came from an appearance in a 1988 comic.) The character of Terror is an anti-hero who can merge other body parts into his own body, which is gross.
Again, according to Marvel, these are not permanently shelved, but they are not moving forward at this time. Frankly, most of us wouldn’t have known if they hadn’t announced it.
